Street Tree Planting

We are excited about the prospects of using the nearly £8000 in the STAG Legal Fund to pay for some new street trees in low canopy/high deprivation areas Sheffield. Trees like these perhaps.

Maybe planting in places like this…..

We will need to work quickly and systematically to get the trees ordered through Amey before the end of March, for planting by Amey in the winter 2026-27 season. The STAG committee has decided that a small working group should work on this, convened by Isabel O’Leary (Membership Secretary) and we are looking for a few volunteers to work together on this over the next few months. Volunteers will ideally need to be able to travel to look at potential planting locations and to meet with local community groups, though working group communications and meetings may be held online. We do have some ideas on potential community groups/ contacts. It would be helpful for volunteers to familiarise themselves with potential planting areas using the “Tree Equity Score UK Map” https://uktreeequityscore.org/

Paul Selby suggests the following steps from his experience of working with Amey to get trees planted outside the Streets Ahead contract:

  1. Set up working group and meet to agree plan (by end Nov)
  2. Identify and meet local community group(s) who we can partner with (it needs buy-in from the local community)
  3. Decide on local community group(s) we will proceed with
  4. Location surveying
  5. Submit locations to Amey for feedback
  6. Amey feedback on locations
  7. Working group and community group(s) discuss feedback and discuss final locations and species
  8. STAG and community group (s) confirm locations and species
  9. Send final order of locations and species to Amey (by 31st March 2026)

If you are interested in working on this and have availability over the next few months, please get in touch with Isabel  using stagsheffieldmembers@gmail.com

STAG website

The committee has been working hard behind the scenes and is pleased to announce that the STAG website is now live! Progress updates, on activities like the tree planting project, will be added as they happen, so keep an eye out for those.

We welcome suggestions as to any other information you think would be useful to publish on the website.

Having achieved a stable situation with reconciliation and a good working relationship between Amey and STAG and other interested parties, it’s looking at how its work could continue into the future, with a timeframe of the next 5 years.
